Sunday Yoga at Ganga Prem Hospice

Raiwala, Rishikesh

An hour-long yoga and pranayam session for caregivers, staff and those patients who felt well enough to participate, was organised at Ganga Prem Hosipce on November 23.
The mild winter morning and invigorating sunshine gave everybody the extra incentive to loosen their body up and stretch. Yoga practitioner and teacher, Neha from Haridwar included yogasanas that beginners could do. “My aim was to relieve the hidden stress that most people carry while engaged in the onerous role of a caregiver”, said the yoga enthusiast.

Starting with OM chanting

Starting with OM chanting, and following it up with asanas such as the sookshmasanas, tadaasana, the half-moon pose, and the trikoneasana which improve balance and posture, the participants started to get into the rhythm of the poses. Breathing exercises and pranayama were explained with the participants being asked to observe their abdomen inflating and deflating to see if their breathing technique was correct.

The shavasana and yog nidra at the end put a GPH nursing officer to sleep, much to the amusement of the rest of the participants. The yoga teacher promised to do more such sessions at Ganga Prem Hospice devoting two Sundays a month for the visits.
