“An elderly couple from a village in the  Himalayan District of Chamoli are staying in the IPD. On being asked if they were being looked after properly, the patient, who has a facial tumour, nodded his head vigorously. His wife then said, ” Yes, yes, and they don’t only look after him, they look after me as well.” “Everyone here gives us so much love, even the hospice cat is so affectionate,”  she  continued , as the cat rubbed herself against her legs purring loudly.”

Mr. Naresh (IPD Patient)

When the home care nurse and social worker entered the house, there were few people around the patient (her mother, husband, daughter, neighbour, and a close friend of her husband). As the condition of the patient is not good, inpatient hospice care has been advised. The nurse, social worker, the patient’s neighbour and her husband’s friend were explaining to the patient and her husband about how much admission would be beneficial to her. Her neighbour said to the patient’s husband, "My mother in law was admitted in this hospice, I can assure your wife will be very much comfortable there. You don’t have to do anything there. This is the best place for end of life care" The friend of the husband had visited the hospice and explained, "I had visited there once to see the facilities. Changing her position every two hours, giving her feed, giving her medicine is not suitable for you, you cannot keep your eye on her all the time and she is deteriorating every day. There at the hospice, there will be so many eyes to watch over the patient and that will give a bit of relaxation for the attendant. It's better not only for the patient but for the family too. You please think about hospice care" The husband Rajesh Verma said, "We will discuss with the family about hospice care, but we must thank you for the homecare visit. We don't know how the end will turn out but we are thankful to your team"

He said, “The care here cannot compare with any other organisations.” Bhagwan Singh ji, while speaking with the GPH social worker, narrated the names of Nav-Durga and said “All you girls are Nav-Durga for me (He mentioned all the female workers in GPH). Whenever you come to me and talk, I feel good and blessed. Sometimes I am unable to talk due to breathing issues but I like how you wait till I take 2 min rest and complete my conversation. I like it that you all come and speak with me.

Patient was in hospice for approx 4-5months. When he was alive he said to the social worker, "Beta (daughter) the doctors and nurses do their duty very efficiently for the disease and the pain but you give me and my wife peace. When you come sit with us and talk we feel like your words have healed us in many ways. Not only for me but you are also healing medicine for my wife. She misses her daughter and your and the head nurse’s words and presence give us the feeling that we are with family. GPH has given us another family with whom we can talk, laugh, cry, share and play. We are also thankful to Nani ma for creating this small world called hospice for us. This might be a small contribution from her but this is a very peaceful world for us."
