Position Title: NURSING SUPERINTENDENT [also called Nursing Administrative Officer (NAO)]
Function: Medical – Nursing Administration
Reporting to: Chief Medical Officer (CMO)
Location: Ganga Prem Hospice, Raiwala, Rishikesh
Job Purpose:
Optimum management of, contribution to and continuous improvement of the medical/nursing activities and standard operating standards of Ganga Prem Hospice, as required in delivering best-in-class service to patients, their carers and the Hospice staff on the whole. To function as an enterprising administrator with a detail-oriented and problem-solving mindset.
Educational & Professional Experience Qualifications:
- M.Sc. (Nursing)
- Valid Nursing Council License
- 8-10 years of documented administrative experience with hospital(s) of repute

Key Duties & Responsibilities (including, but not limited to)
- Adhere to all Hospice policies, procedures, nursing protocols and code of conduct
- Possess the necessary knowledge and skills to provide a high standard of clinical nursing care that meets the patient’s needs within the agreed policies
- Ensure highest standards of patient care, and caregiver and staff care at the hospice
- Continuously improve patient care standards through ongoing development of nursing team
- Be collaborative and cooperative with inter-disciplinary teams (counsellors, social workers, volunteers and Management) to plan and give patient care
- Acts as liaison officer between the medical/nursing team and administration team
- Avoid any violation of confidentiality of patient and Hospice information/data
- High-level understanding and comfort with documentation and upload of forms and data online
- Ensure proper clinical observation and recording of data relating to patients admitted in the hospice, ensuring that accurate records of patient care and progress are maintained and reviewed
- Prepare and effectively execute nursing staff rosters and patient assignments
- Ensure strict discipline and decorum at all times, including that of nurses and nursing assistants and other junior staff
- Ensure proper and smooth handover and takeover during the change of rostered shifts
- Conduct daily morning rounds (and preferably evening rounds) of the hospice in-patient to check on patients and their files
- Ensure appropriate inventory levels of medicines, pharmacy consumables and medical equipment
- Provide direct nursing care, as necessary; may carry out a variety of invasive procedures like IV cannulation, feeding tubes, catheterisation, chemo-port flushing etc.
Ensure that Home Care visits are properly planned, executed, documented, reported and uploaded online as per procedural timelines - Ensure that the OPD camps/clinics/teleconsultations/consultations are properly planned, conducted and documented
- Communicate regularly with patients and their relatives, and the hospice staff to promote and maintain understanding and progress and cooperation with treatment
- Remain calm in difficult situations and conversations, including ensuring high level of situational awareness
- Be aware of the role of audit and research, have the ability to maintain an effective audit trail and work towards continual improvement in quality assurance programme
- Make frequent visits to the patients to evaluate their condition. Palliate the patient’s condition as required
- Document and report any accident or incident in which you or your team are involved
- Perform extra duties when called upon especially in exigent circumstances
- Be collaborative and cooperative with inter-disciplinary teams (counsellors, social workers, volunteers and Management) to plan and give patient care
- Remain fully trained on all services offered by GPH India, including all related protocols, rules and routines
- Coordinate with palliative care doctor, staff nurse and administrative assistant(s) during patient admission, care, movement and discharge or death
- Ensure that the ‘Patient Care Plan’ (PCP) and related data are kept up to date and 100% accurate
- Ensure that the patient is receiving correct and good quality (hygiene + taste) diet
- Maintain personal, patient, Hospice and environmental hygiene
- Be aware of and implement protocols across the Hospice services (Home Care, In-patient Care, Cancer Camps and Bereavement Support) such as admission, care, discharge, death, hygiene, infection control, waste management, patient safety, patient and staff education etc.
- Ensure that all Hospice gadgets, instruments and equipment used for patient care in the wards/elsewhere are maintained in great condition
- Handle medical waste segregation and management and disposal as per Policy and regulations
- Attend programmes and training sessions (Management-proposed and self-initiated) to develop own knowledge and career
- Be aware of patients’ rights and preserve the same
- Be aware of and implement global palliative care standards at the Hospice
- Participate in all quality improvement activities of the Hospice
- Help the patient and family/caregiver cope with the upcoming loss
- Ensure that medicine consumption/usage records are kept up to date and accurate
- Take increasing initiative inpatient and staff recreational activities – by organising as well as participating
- Remain proficient with the use of computer, email, MS Office and other Hospice systems
- Ensure compassionate communication with patients, families and Hospice colleagues
- Be totally clear on the medication dose(s) to be administered. In case you do not understand, clarify from the doctor(s) immediately
- Keep the family updated through in-person or telephonic conversations in case of deterioration in patient’s condition
- Safeguard all Hospice property, equipment and infrastructure at all times as per Policy
- Remain mindful and respectful, especially with colleagues and seniors
- Create and continuously innovate important policies and procedures for medical staff to improve the quality standards
- Set/help set performance goals for nurses and other junior employees of the hospice for effective performance management
- Planning and conducting staff meetings and training sessions on the various aspects of palliative care and hospice care
- Keep accurate/documented stock of office supplies and ensure timely replenishment (in coordination with HoD Administration, Rishikesh)
- Submit all reports in a timely manner and prepare presentations/proposals as assigned
- Assist the Management in the patient referral system and spreading awareness thereof. Visit hospitals and oncologists to get referrals as instructed by the CMO/palliative care doctors
- Assist colleagues whenever necessary
- Handle and escalate/report, as necessary, complaints/grievances of patients, families and staff
- Maintain, in pristine condition, the office facility and all active infrastructure and serviced items
- Engage and liaison with interns and volunteers as advised by the management
- Complete responsibility of office record-maintenance as per GPH filing systems and safekeeping as per regulatory guidelines
- Maintain complete confidentiality of information and records pertaining to the Trust, the Hospice, patients, caregivers and staff
- Mandatory to conduct annual self-review of all documentation for which you are directly responsible as a preparer or reviewer
- Prepare and ensure adherence to the nursing staff roster(s) to ensure timeliness and discipline
- Ensure that all patients, medical staff and guests receive proper hospitality as prescribed by the Management
- Lead the implementation efforts of ‘at least’ two (02) improvement drives/plans at the hospice in a calendar year
- Contribute physically, if needed, with movement of patients in and around the office premises and other spaces
- One-on-one relationship with all functional peers and heads of departments
- Good, cordial relationship with the entire hospice staff as well as volunteers and other associates
- Ensure transparent and clear communication of own department with all other departments and remain resolution-oriented at all times
