Mr. Dimple Verma, a 43-year-old autorickshaw driver residing in a rented house in Nai Basti, Haripurkalan, Haridwar, found his life taking a sharp turn when he was diagnosed with Carcinoma in his left buccal mucosa. Living with his wife Jyoti, who worked as a dishwasher, and their two young sons (aged 13 yrs and 9 yrs respectively), Mr. Verma faced the daunting challenge of battling cancer while struggling to make ends meet financially.
It was at a screening camp jointly organised by Ganga Prem Hospice in Rishikesh and the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre in Delhi that Mr. Verma’s journey towards healing began. Initially experiencing difficulties in eating and swallowing, Mr. Verma discussed his issues with someone he knows and who is a current homecare patient in Haridwar city. He then called up Ganga Prem Hospice’s home care nurse and sought her help, she recommended him to visit the screening camp held at Wipro company in Sidcul, Haridwar on 04.07.2023.
Despite the strict rules and regulations, the team at Wipro allowed Mr. Verma access to the camp for a consultation with an ENT oncologist from RGCIRC. Following an examination the oncologist expressed that the probability of a diagnosis of cancer is 80-90%. The team of RGCIRC, along with the team of Ganga Prem Hospice, guided and counselled Mr. Verma for the process of further investigations and treatment at RGCIRC, Delhi. Mr. Verma was scared of undergoing investigation as well as surgery (if planned) due to myths regarding cancer which he had heard from neighbours or friends.
Over the course of five months, the homecare team from Ganga Prem Hospice provided Mr. Verma with comfort, pain management, and crucial counseling, ensuring he felt supported and informed throughout his journey. Finally, Mr. Verma found the courage to visit RGCIRC, Delhi for further investigations. As per the stage of cancer and proper medical planning, on 18th March 2024, Mr. Verma underwent surgery at RGCIRC, returning to Haridwar with gratitude and relief, as every expense, of the investigations, surgery and post-operative care, was covered by RGCIRC, Delhi.
This heartwarming story of Mr. Dimple Verma’s fight against cancer is a testament to the power of compassion, teamwork, and dedicated care. Ongoing home care visits by the Ganga Prem Hospice nurses provide invaluable support to Mr. Verma and his family, free of cost, ensuring that they never feel alone in their battle against this challenging disease.
