In the lead-up to World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Ganga Prem Hospice (GPH) will organize a free cancer screening camp on Sunday, May 25, at Sardarni Nanki Devi Punjab Sindh Kshetra Hospital, Haridwar Road, Rishikesh, from 9 am to 1pm.
Dr AK Dewan, Ganga Prem Hospice’s medical director and director of surgical oncology at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi will attend the camp, accompanied by doctors and nursing staff from GPH.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the link between tobacco use and cancer, particularly among high-risk groups.
Since 2017, GPH has provided inpatient care to 215 patients with cancers of the mouth, face, and neck, of which 85% were male. Additionally, 110 patients with lung cancer have received palliative care, with men making up 72% of this group. Experts point to the widespread consumption of cigarettes, tobacco, gutkha, and beedis as key contributing factors to these cancers.
