“Health and Cancer Screening Camp at Civil Hospital, Roorkee- 23.07.2023”
To raise awareness about cancer, oncologists from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Delhi along with a Ganga Prem Hospice team organized a successful health and cancer screening camp at the Civil Hospital, Roorkee with the invaluable assistance of the local Rotary Club. The camp aimed to reach out to the community and provide much-needed healthcare services in the form of cancer screening.
The camp, held on 23.07.2023, brought together a team of experienced medical professionals who conducted screenings and provided essential advice on cancer prevention and early detection. The ENT oncologist offered expertise in diagnosing and treating cancers related to the ear, nose, and throat, while the Gynaecology oncologist focused on women’s health issues, particularly gynaecological cancers such as carcinoma cervix (by offering PAP Smear tests), and carcinoma breast (by physical examination).
With the support and collaboration of the Rotary Club, Roorkee, the camp received significant publicity through newspapers and banners, ensuring that the local community was well aware of the event. This effort was crucial in encouraging people to take advantage of the free screenings and seek necessary medical assistance. The Rotary Club also extended their hospitality by providing refreshments and thoughtful gifts as a token of appreciation to the medical team of RGCIRC; GPH & the Civil Hospital.
The camp witnessed an overwhelming response from the community, with 111 patients, including 8 already diagnosed with cancer. Screening camps help to detect cases in the early stages of cancer development , and may allow for timely intervention which improves chances of effective treatment.
The success of the camp was not only measured in terms of the number of screenings performed but also in the impact it had on the community. It served as a reminder of the importance of regular health check-ups and promoted a proactive approach towards cancer prevention.
