Administrative Volunteer
Ganga Prem Hospice

Steven Lopresti is our first official international volunteer. Coming from Montreal, Canada, he has been an important part of the Ganga Prem Hospice team in Rishikesh since January of this year.

Steven has been instrumental in setting up the GPH office in Rishikesh, including the creation and implementation of local administrative files and accounts. Steven manned our publicity stall during the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar, which involved no little sacrifice for someone from a cold country as the stall was set up in an enclosed and unventilated tent during the very hottest part of the Indian summer. As well as helping in the monthly clinics and acting as photographer for Ganga Prem Hospice, Steven has helped arrange for the placing and emptying of donation boxes in Rishikesh, and has carried out numerous other necessary tasks involved in the steady expansion of the local GPH programme.

Steven first heard of Ganga Prem Hospice from a friend who works in GPH's twin hospice in Montreal, Maison d'Hérelle. He had been inspired to work with terminally-ill cancer patients after eight months of looking after his own mother who died of pancreatic cancer last year. With first-hand experience of the difficulties faced by patients and their families, Steven wanted to help other people in the same situation and was excited about the prospect of doing this work in India. He has not been disappointed and says, "I'm really happy to be part of this project. In fact, I would love to stay on for another year."

Update: Steven returned to Canada after four years of service with Ganga Prem Hospice. He still manages the website and monthly e-newsletter to this day.
